Cleft Lip and Palate Program | Research

The team in the Cleft Lip and Palate Program at Boston Children’s Hospital conducts collaborates on research aimed at:

  • Shaping widespread understanding cleft lip and palate
  • Improving the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions in children
  • Understanding how and why cleft lip and palate occur and what role genetics play in the development of certain abnormalities
  • Helping children with conditions of the head and face lead healthy and fulfilling lives

Some of our current and ongoing research projects include the study of:

  • Outcomes data from cleft lip and palate patients, including cleft nasal deformity and symmetry studies using 3D photography
  • Outcomes in repaired unilateral incomplete cleft lip
  • Role of the upper lateral cartilage in cleft lip nasal deformity
  • Long-term nasolabial symmetry in repaired bilateral asymmetrical cleft lip
  • Arthropometric analysis of nasolabial growth in Asian adoptees following complete revision
