Education Core | Intro to Biostatistics with SPSS

This six-lecture course and its companion computer lab sessions will cover the basic principles of biostatistics as well introduce you to using SPSS. Topics will include:

  • Data Summaries
  • Graphical Methods
  • Confidence Intervals
  • Comparing Means
  • Comparing proportions
  • Nonparametric tests
  • Managing your data
  • Statistical analysis with SPSS

Target Audience

Junior faculty, fellows, nurse investigators, study coordinators and others who desire further knowledge of introductory biostatistics.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Create data summaries and graphs/plots
  • Understand hypothesis testing, p-values, and confidence intervals
  • Perform t-tests, ANOVA and non-parametric tests
  • Understand Pearson’s and Spearman’s correlations
  • Calculate proportions, odds ratios, risk ratios, and risk differences
  • Perform Chi-square, Fisher’s exact and McNemar’s tests
  • Introduction to linear and logistic regression
  • Choose the right statistical test based on the design
  • Interpret statistical results in the literature

When: Mondays October 2nd - November 6th, 2017

  • Session A - Lecture 12:00-1:00pm (Lab 1:30-2:30pm)
  • Session B - Lecture 1:30-2:30pm (Lab 3:00-4:00pm)
