PROFESSIONAL HISTORY

Dr. Tishelman is a clinical psychologist with training in pediatric psychology and developmental psychopathology. She is currently the Director of Clinical Research in the Behavioral Health, Endocrinology and Urology (BE-U) Program and Gender Multispecialty Service (GeMS) at Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH). The BE-U program provides multidisciplinary clinical services to youth and young adults with sex development differences, while the GeMS program serves transgender and gender diverse children, adolescents and young adults. She is also a Senior Attending Psychologist at BCH, engaged in clinical care, and an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Tishelman has an abiding interest in the development of care systems addressing the needs of diverse and vulnerable children, and she worked extensively in the areas of child maltreatment and trauma before moving to the BE-U-GeMS program. Dr. Tishelman has been awarded several NIH grants as a MPI or Co-I, investigating predictors of psychosocial outcomes for gender diverse youth and youth with sex development differences, and has completed a number of studies on reproductive health in the transgender population. Along with colleagues, Dr. Tishelman published a clinical report in the journal Pediatrics through the American Academy of Pediatrics on fertility and sexual function counseling for at risk pediatric patients.

Dr. Tishelman is active in the area of sex and gender diversity on a national and international basis. Dr. Tishelman was selected by the World Association of Transgender Health (WPATH) to be the international lead developing new global standards of care for gender diverse prepubescent children, and was chosen by the American Psychological Association to co-chair a newly formed national task force on DSD. She is on several journal editorial boards, including the editorial board of the WPATH journal, “International Journal of Transgender Health” and “Child Abuse and Neglect”, and served as a co-editor of a special issue of the journal, Clinical Practices in Pediatric Psychology, on “Advancing the Practice of Pediatric Psychology with Transgender Youth.”

Prior to her current endeavors, Dr. Tishelman was the BCH Director of Training and Research for the Child Protection Program and, earlier, BCH Director of Child Protection Clinical Services (CPCS). She has co-edited special double issues of the Journal of Child Sexual Abuse and The Journal of Child and Adolescent Trauma and has been a frequent expert witness in this area.
